Welcome to my Wambana Blog

Wambana is a program run by Prince Alfred College for the year 9 students. Wambana has four staff members managing Wambana who include Mr Hobbs, "Moff", Beardy and Paul. The staff at wambana help the students advance in there personal development of independence. We spend 4 days sleeping in tents during the cycle tour where we ride a total of around 130km over the 3 days. We then move into the Wadali's in which we live independently in sixes and do all the daily choirs of the household and if we dont we get points each day if we lose all our points we sleep on the verandahi or in a tent for up to 7 days. Welcome to my blog who ever is reading this use the tabs on the right to get to the right posts. The name Wardli comes from the local aboriginal word meaning dwelling. I am living in my wadali with Harrison Page, Ned Murdoch, Jake Gurke and Alex Mitolo. I hope to experience many new experiences during my time at wambana, which include learning new dishes that i can make at home, Learn how to efficently manage my time between cleaning and having fun and finally learning to be tidy in a shared house with everything in the right place.

Cycle Tour

Total :133km

Day 1-Tuesday 15th March 2011
West Cowie Loop 20km/ Warooka Loop 20km
I imagined it would be a quiet dirt road near some old towns.Yes since i have never riden this distance
The hills and road type definetly effected my ride since i got tired very quickly on the first day. I also got cramp going up the Warooka Hill. The weather was sunny and warm so it did not effect the riding but a small headwind did slow me down slightly. There was a small problem with the distance of the activity since it was the first major long disance ride in my entire life.It definetly changed my opinion of what a long bike ride is and feels like. The conditions of the road were normal. Lots of physical and some mental pain as well.I was told to just forget everything else and just keep on riding.

Items Needed:
sport shorts
t-shirt
Daypack
scroggin
letter writing gear

Day 2-Wednesday 16th March 2011
Innes National Park Entrance to Dolphin bay/ Return. 43km
We started the day by going up a hill at the start we then visited the Westcape lighthouse and we had to walk up to it. We later road on the dirt road which was heavily corrigated. It felt very uncomftorable. After we had lunch at Dolphin bay we came back down the dirt road and back to the entrance of the park.I imagined it would be hilly and very bushy.I havent riden in a National Park before. The first part with large hill coming down it was good but the grated road to doplhin bay was terrible so bumpy and it made the hard seats feel even worse, coming back up the large hill we went down was not so good as going down it. The weather was good with a good tail wind going down the hill but a bad headwind coming back up it.The continous up and down felt better than just long flats to me. This activity made me appreciatite riding on asphalt roads since I hate corigatted roads. The conditions were ok. Less physical pain but the dirt road to dolphin bay made me soar.

Day 3- Thursday 17th March 2011
Sunbury-Edithburg 48km
I imagined it would be a flattish road to Edithburg. I havent riden from one town to another ever before. The first ride to our lunch spot was not good since we had a hard headwind to compete with all day. The weather was windy but sunny. The headwind caused many problems for me. It definetly changed me seeing a distance and thinking its miles away but it only being a few kilometers. The road conditions were pretty good. The conditions were average. Some pain due to the extra energy needed to ride into the headwind.

Introduction to Statistics

In statistics we are learning about median, mode, range, Q1, Q3, IGR, lowest, highest and average. We have a test at the end of extended stay on statistics.

The 3.4km run

I did not enjoy the dirt road at the since it is so soft it is very hard to run on. I felt that I did the best I could so I am pleased with my time. I am in the third Quatieral. Trees
Norfolk Pine
The Norfolk pine is native to Norfolk island. The island was discovered by  and was claimed as a part of Australia. The Norfolk Pine is used as a mask for ships or to signal where a port is located in Australia. All ports in Australia have Norfolk Pines planted. Hemp was also discovered on Norfolk island. Hemp is used to make rope or canvas. So Norfolk Island was used to fix ships on there way to Australia.

Peppercorn Tree
The peppercorn tree is planted near early settlers homes for use as spices. The peppercorn tree comes from India.

Aleppo Pine
The Aleppo Pine is now catogorised as a pest tree now due to it not providing any food for animals. The Aleppo Pine is native to Europe especially the Mediterranian region. The Aleppo Pine was introduced because European settlers wanted a tree that reminded them of home and the Aleppo Pine does that job well. The Aleppo Pine is also used as a wind break along driveways.

Boxthorn
The boxthorn is from England. The Boxthorn is used as a early form of fencing for the early settlers to keep there herds in a pattock. The Boxthorn is now a Weed as it is spikey and now has no uses for anyone or any animal.

Malee
The Malee is a tree that is native to Australia. The Malee tree is very resistant to fine due to it having the trunk underground and not exposed to the fire. The Malee tree is a excellent firewod due to it burning for ages.

Sheoak
The Sheoak is native to Australia. The Sheoak is very fire resistant due to the bark which is fire resistant. The Sheoak is not used for anything but it is spread all across Australia.

Cypress Pine
The Cypress Pine is native to Queensland. The Cypress Pine is used for firewood since it has turpentine in it that acts like a fire lighter. The Cypress pine is now located all across Australia.

Mines
Point Turton Mine
The Point Turton Mine was used to Mine limestone. The limestone was used to make houses and to make flux. Limestone is formed at the bottom of the ocean by millions years of dead organisms being compressed. This mine has now been tirmed into the Point Turton carvan park because of the mine being shelted from the wind.

Stenhouse bay Mine
The Stenhouse bay mine is used to mine gypsum. The gypsum is used to make a commonanly used product today known as plaster. The Stenhouse bay mine stopped production in 19  .This is due to

Inneston Mine
the Ineston bay also mines gypsum. The Inneston Mine used mining carts pulled by steam engined trains. The area around the mine has no trees left due to the steam engines needing the wood to produce the steam. The gypsum mined there was also used as plaster.

Snorkelling

Mask Clearing
You put some spit on the lens and rub it in so that it makes a protective layer so there is no fog on the lenses you then put it in the sea water and put the mask on and it will not fog up at all or you need to add more spit to the mask if it does fog.

Putting Flippers on
You bend the ruber at the back to the underneath so it slips on like a slipper and make sure it is a tight fit but not extremely tight.

I saw some crabs and some very small fish
I went snorkelling at a cove called Treasure Cove
The visibility was around 3meters all the time but when the sand got sturred up by others some of the visibility was only around 10cm.
The best part was when the wetsuit started to warm up and make me feel warm.
My greatest challenge was doing the dolphin dive because i just did not understand how to do it.

Novel

Assassins Creed Renaissance
Author: Oliver Bowden

Entry 1- I selected this book to read because I really enjoy ancient italy and the story about a assassin who wants revenge for what happened to his family really interesting to me. This book is also based on a popular game and that is another reason that I wanted to read this book.

The story takes place in Renaissance Italy. The storys main character Ezio visites 4 towns in Italy. He goes to Florence, Siena, Forli and Ravenna

Main Characters
Ezio- Only surviving Man of the Auditore family and is a assassin now
Leonardo Da Vinci- Artist and Inventor and can translate codex
Mario- In charge of Monteriggioni

Entry 2-This book has been made intresting to young readers by using plenty of action throughout the whole novel like murders and intresting fights that are very detailed by the author. It is also intresting to youg readers because it has a intresting story line with a mass hanging of the Auditore family and Ezio feeling bad because he could not stop the hangings and this brings him revenge for what the Order of the Knight Templars did to his family. Ezio is just learning that his dad was not just a banker but a assasin in The Order of The Assasssins.

Session 1

My strength in the Wardli is definitely managing the washing efficiently and finding time to get washing back to the other members of my Wardli. I have to improve my share of taking the load as sometimes i can slack off a bit after I have done my part in the laundry. I also need to improve my cooking because I would like to cook dessert myself soon and say that I did it alone. I would also like to learn how to do the moping since when i tried it yesterday i just got the floor very wet and did not actually clean the floor.

In our Wardli some people are not doing there share of the load and this is effecting the wardi socially as a whole. This is being fixed by the individual learning that he has to take the initative to do a job if someone else needs any help. We hope to have this issue solved and done with as soon as possible so that our Wardli can go from a 9/10 to a 10/10. my personal contribution was to help the individual achieve his goal as soon as possible without disrupting the harmony already in our Wardli.

Community Service-Leisure Options

A volunteer to me means that you give up your time to help a need or cause for no payment of any sort.

I learnt that people living with a disability need people taking care of them nearly 24/7 and that some basic things like driving or cooking is impossible to them. Some of them cant even talk which makes you feel like they cant communicate easily to others.

I enjoyed most sitting next to a man called Anthony who does not talk much he was playing Bingo when i was sitting next to me he really wanted to win Bingo and he happened to win he was really happy and i did not see him so happy before that and the second time he won i could not blieve what i saw he was just over the moon. Talking to him was also very funny and i couldve stayed next to him for the rest of the day.

I least enjoyed when I started talking to Jess that she didnt stop and it felt like it was to rude to walk away so I had to wait for around 15 minutes before she had a break and i could talk and do something else other than listen.

We did our second Leisure Options session at Wambana on friday the 1st of April. They all arrived in buses and we went up and catched up with them. We then prepared pizzas with them to go into the pizza oven. The pizzas for lunch went well and the icecream cones after was a good dessert. After lunch we all played some ball games like over and under and left and right. Then I went and helped on the mosaic but some other boys went and played sports like footy and cricket with the Leisure Options group.I really enjoyed this day and I think all the Leisure Options group were very happy to come and be with us for the day.

Scientific Research-Hooded Plover

Scientific Research-Hooded Plover By Tom Parish

Synopsis
The Hooded Plover is a bird which is located only in Australia. There are around 500 Hooded Plovers in South Australia. The Hooded Plover is 10cm high and 20cm long. They are around 90-100g. They have red legs, black heads, greyish back and a white underbelly. They nest just above the high tide level. The Hooded Plovers are currently underthreat from Vehicles driving on beaches, human beach activites and animals which may harm the nest or eggs. The beaches are being signed and people are trying to protect the Hooded Plover from extinction.

Aim
The aim is to research the beaches in which Hooded Plovers live to learn about there current population, Habitat and Nesting. This data collected will be used to setup a long term Hooded Plover monitor and to make rashinal changes to better protect the Hooded Plover from extinction. This Study is also trying to learn the current threats that the Hooded Plover are under which include: vehicles driving on the beaches, human beach activites such as walking and animals which could damage or destroy the nest or eggs of the Hooded Plover. This data will also be used to make radical desichons to improve the Hooded Plovers chances of suviral such as some signs and non-driving zones which have already happened.

Method
We will each have specific jobs to make sure the rearch project runs smothely which include: a scribe to neatly write data down for future reference, a GPS operator to mark the location of the Hooded Plovers when spotted for further sciencetific research in the future, threat observer to spot the threats to the Hooded Plovers on the beaches in which they live on and a photographer to take photos of the Hooded Plover for reports or for other purposes. All people with jobs will work together to make the research succesful. We are looking for threats to the Hooded Plover, Hooded Plovers location and nest.

Results
The results of the Hooded Plover research were succesful with us spotting and marking the location of 4 Hooded Plovers. The locations of the Hooded Plovers we located are S 35* 140.77 E 136* 50.40 of the first pair of hooded plovers which were located running near the water edge. The second Pair of Hooded Plovers were located at S 35* 140.039 E 136* 50.507. This is a goog result due to there only being around 50 Hooded Plovers on the Yorke Peninsula and we saw 4 of them on one beach. This is odd because the Hooded Plover is not a social bird and usually sticks together with a partner in pairs. This result proves that the Hooded Plovers are increaing in population. This may be due to the new signs and no driving zones on pondalowie bay where we did the research. The threats are being decreased which means there is more chance that the Hooded Plover will survive.

Wambana Weather Observations

Leadership Day

Our leadership day was very easy since we only stayed on campus. We first ran to the shops and got the paper. We then came back and wrote up the news of the day on the board. The news of the day was about Prince william visiting queensland. There was no finance since it was sunday and the market was not open. We started by having our first living in a wardli seesion. This went well with other boys doing there blogs. In the afternoon we split in to two groups and did cooking with Moff then shell carving with Paul. This almost finished our day with blogs and the weather observation in the evening blog session. This means that our day went perfectly but our only mistake was not posting the mail.

Surfing

Monday 28th March 2011
The surfing today was at Berri south. The surf instructors are from Surf Culture. They are called Max who is the under 18 national surfing champion and Luke who is a bit older but has many years experience. I really enjoyed today since I did stand up a few times and it was very fun. The day lasted around 2 hours of surfing. We then stopped at Cowie Point shop and got a chance for some personal shopping eg coke, ice cream, chips.

Tuesday 29th March 2011
The surfing was at Daly Heads. We spent the whole day there which included lunch. There were a few rips occuring their and we had to move a couple of times to move away from the rips. We then at the end of the day went to the Cowie Point shop. The same shop as yesterday. I really enjoyed this day of surfinf since I could stand up a lot that day and could turn a bit compared to the day before when I couldnt even stand up yet.
